How a grocery chain increased bandwidth across 250 stores—without increasing IT costs

Coop eG, Germany’s largest consumer retail cooperative with more than 250 stores, faced an aging MPLS/DSL network that limited bandwidth per branch and made upgrades prohibitively expensive. Seeking a centrally managed, easy-to-use solution that their small IT team could operate, Coop eG selected Cisco Meraki—deploying Meraki MX security appliances (MX400 in the control center and MX64 at 250 locations) and the cloud‑based Meraki dashboard to gain visibility, flexibility and secure branch networking.

Cisco Meraki implemented Auto VPN connections between sites, QoS layer‑7 traffic shaping, centralized templates for fast device provisioning, and the ability to push software/content updates and security policies from the dashboard. The result: Coop eG increased effective bandwidth across all 250 stores without raising IT costs, achieved stable, easily monitored networks, accelerated multimedia and software rollouts, and enabled a small 38‑person IT team to manage the entire estate efficiently.
