A Cisco Jasper Case Study
Semios, a Vancouver-based precision farming company founded in 2010, helps fruit and nut growers reduce toxic pesticide use by deploying a network of connected devices—pheromone dispensers, camera traps, soil moisture meters and weather stations. The challenge was that pheromones, a safer alternative, are typically more expensive and were traditionally released at a constant rate, so Semios needed a cost-effective, scalable way to automate targeted delivery and manage many field devices across different carrier networks.
By building an IoT service model and using Cisco Jasper’s Control Center for provisioning, remote monitoring and carrier-agnostic device management, Semios can trigger pheromone release only during peak insect activity and remotely diagnose field equipment. The result is more effective, cost-efficient pest control that has reduced routine pesticide spraying, enabled new services (frost, irrigation, disease management), simplified grower adoption through a solution-as-a-service model, and supported global scale and planned expansion into Latin America.
