A Cisco HyperFlex Case Study
Ergon Energy, an Energy Queensland company serving more than 850,000 metered customers across 97% of Queensland, faced a rapidly growing and highly distributed operational network of substations, fibre, high‑speed communications and satellite links — plus an accelerated rollout of intelligent pole‑mounted devices that increased complexity and security risk. To replace a management‑heavy server & SAN model with an on‑premise, single‑vendor platform, Ergon selected Cisco HyperFlex (HX‑Series) hyperconverged infrastructure.
Cisco HyperFlex delivered a complete on‑premise stack (servers, storage, hypervisor/VMware, networking and automation) that Ergon commissioned in about two weeks versus an estimated 4–6 months for a traditional build. The deployment reduced rack footprint to a single rack with two network cables, delivered roughly 25× server performance compared with prior platforms, and enabled new virtual servers to be deployed from template in under 20 minutes — lowering upfront and support costs, simplifying maintenance, and accelerating time‑to‑market. Ergon plans to expand its Cisco HyperFlex footprint further.
