Modernizing Vessel Control Systems with Ignition and MQTT

A multinational energy corporation faced significant challenges modernizing data collection across its fleet of vessels. Siloed operational technology (OT) systems, redundant data paths, and expensive, limited satellite bandwidth prevented efficient, secure data transfer to the cloud for analytics. To overcome this, they partnered with Cirrus Link and implemented a solution utilizing the Ignition SCADA platform with Cirrus Link's MQTT and Sparkplug modules.

Cirrus Link's solution established a secure, efficient data pipeline from the vessel's OT systems to the cloud using the MQTT protocol for bandwidth-friendly data transmission and Sparkplug for data contextualization. This allowed the customer to consolidate all vessel data into a single stream, drastically reducing satellite bandwidth usage by only sending data on change. The project was deployed faster than expected, enabling advanced analytics for predictive maintenance and operational improvements across the entire fleet.
