NGL Energy Partners, a diversified midstream oil & gas company, faced the challenge of improving operational efficiency and revenue generation across its widespread saltwater disposal facilities. They partnered with vendor Cirrus Link, along with system integrator Texas Automation Systems and platform provider Inductive Automation, to create a new, scalable SCADA system that could connect assets from field to enterprise.

The solution implemented by Cirrus Link involved using MQTT modules for the Ignition SCADA platform, which was crucial for enabling peer-to-peer communication and handling limited bandwidth in remote locations. The use of the Sparkplug B specification allowed for the automatic discovery of over 1.25 million tags from 114 sites. This resulted in a smart field that optimized wastewater routing, eliminated the need to reject incoming water, maximized facility usage, and increased revenues for NGL.
