A CircleCI Case Study
The City of San Diego’s DataSD portal, a public-facing site for city operations and civic data, was rebuilt in 2017 as a custom Jekyll site maintained by a small three-person team. Because datasets, metadata and content change multiple times a day, manual deployment was time-consuming, error-prone and incompatible with the team’s goal of keeping infrastructure minimal.
The city uses CircleCI to automate branch-based deployments—coordinating with Airflow for data updates and using Netlify (with S3/CloudFront for hosting) for staging and production—so merges trigger tested, automatic releases. The result is reliable, several-times-daily deployments with less operational overhead and stress, allowing staff to focus on analysis and publishing new data.
