B&J Specialty Increases Production Rate by 30% with Metal 3D-Printed Conformally-Cooled Injection Mold

B&J Specialty, an injection molding company, faced the challenge of increasing productivity for an automotive duct. Long tooling cycles were required to prevent warpage, and the conventional mold design resulted in significant temperature variations that slowed down production. To address this, they turned to Cimatron and its integrated CAD/CAM software.

The solution from Cimatron involved designing a new mold with conformal cooling channels, which were then produced using metal additive manufacturing. This approach, implemented with a ProX DMP 300 printer, resulted in a dramatically improved process. Cimatron's solution led to an 86% reduction in temperature variation, accelerated the cooling cycle time from one minute to 40 seconds, and increased the overall production rate by 30%, while also delivering higher-quality parts.
