Utah Education Network Provides Bandwidth On Demand for Research

The University of Utah, working through the Utah Education Network (UEN), needed to overcome rapidly growing bandwidth demands from researchers and superusers who had outgrown the state’s existing 10G network. To support data-intensive science and high-performance computing, they looked for a scalable optical transport solution from Ciena.

Ciena and UEN built a new 100G metro optical network on the Ciena 6500 Packet-Optical Platform, adding 100G wavelengths between the university’s computing center, new downtown data center, and Internet2, while retaining 10G and Fibre Channel services. The result was a tenfold increase in available bandwidth, faster service provisioning, simpler unified management, and ongoing cost savings versus leased circuits.
