Telefónica Deutschland’s evolution to an open, software-defined network with Blue Planet Software

Telefónica UK, part of Telefónica, needed to migrate costly legacy TDM services running from 2G and 3G cell sites onto a modern networking platform without disrupting service. The company also wanted a single management system for both legacy TDM and next-generation services, and turned to Ciena for a solution that could support both environments side by side.

Ciena implemented its 6500 Packet Transport System (6500 PTS) with the MCP domain controller to deliver up to 100GbE transport, unified management, and seamless migration with no downtime. The project helped Telefónica UK achieve CAPEX and OPEX savings, improve operating efficiency, reduce fault rates, streamline incident response, and support a more scalable, power-efficient network for future services.
