Spark Adds Real-Time Analytics with Ciena Innovations

Spark, New Zealand's largest telecommunications provider, faced challenges with network resiliency, particularly from natural disasters causing widespread fiber cuts and power outages. To create a more adaptive network and meet rising subscriber demands, the company enlisted vendor Ciena to implement its second-generation Optical Transport Network (OTN 2.0).

Ciena's solution, powered by its 6500 photonic line system and WaveLogic optics, incorporated advanced software for real-time analytics and automation. This included Liquid Restoration for automatic traffic recovery and PinPoint OTDR for precise fault localization. The new network now carries seven times more data capacity and has successfully restored traffic within minutes during extreme weather events, significantly reducing outage durations and repair times for Spark.
