Southern Cross Sets the Pace with Ciena

Southern Cross, the submarine cable operator connecting Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific islands, and the U.S. West Coast, faced rapidly rising bandwidth demand and changing customer expectations for more flexible, transparent connectivity. Working with Ciena, the company needed a way to expand capacity while improving service visibility and operational efficiency across its long-haul network.

Ciena implemented WaveLogic Ai coherent optical technology along with Blue Planet MCP and Ciena Insights Service to create a more adaptive, programmable network with stronger analytics and automation. The result was a jump to more than 22 Tb/s of total transmission capacity, a 90x increase over the original network, plus a shift in operations from mostly data correlation to 80% proactive analysis and planning. Ciena’s solution also helped Southern Cross launch Bandwidth-on-Demand and Performance Portal services, while enabling proactive issue detection and reducing unnecessary customer support calls.
