Southern Cross boosts submarine cable capacity by 50% with Ciena

Southern Cross Cables Limited, a provider of submarine cable connectivity between the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand, faced the ongoing challenge of meeting the web-scale bandwidth demands of its users across its vast 29,000+ kilometer network. To adapt to these evolving needs and overcome the limitations of its extensive infrastructure, Southern Cross turned to its long-time vendor, Ciena, and its WaveLogic coherent optical technology.

Ciena implemented its WaveLogic 5 Extreme (WL5e) 800G solution and GeoMesh Extreme, powered by the 6500 Packet-Optical Platform. This solution enabled Southern Cross to transmit the world's first single wavelength 800G across its live network. The results included an end-to-end connectivity solution that is faster, uses less space and power, and delivers up to 50 percent more capacity, upgrading the network's potential by more than 40 times its original design.
