A Ciena Case Study
Miami-Dade County, serving more than 2.5 million residents across roughly 2,000 square miles, needed to modernize an aging telecom-style network that was increasingly burdened by voice, video, data center virtualization, and public service traffic. Its legacy SONET/TDM infrastructure had become expensive to provision and maintain, yet it still had to support critical county operations for more than 25,000 employees, public safety, transportation, courts, libraries, and citizen services.
Ciena designed and deployed a converged optical Ethernet solution using its Packet Networking Portfolio, including the 3930 Service Delivery Switch and 5150 Service Aggregation Switch, across two protected 10 Gb/s rings. The new network enabled flexible service prioritization, stronger resiliency, improved security, and easier scaling for future packet-based services, while lowering overall operating cost and improving service delivery for government applications and public access portals.
