Openreach increases fibre network capacity 4x with Ciena

Openreach, a division of BT and the UK's leading digital network provider, faced the challenge of meeting a massive increase in demand for home connectivity during the Covid-19 pandemic. To provide faster, more agile, and resilient services for its customers, Openreach partnered with Ciena and leveraged its Routing and Switching products and WaveLogic Ai coherent optical technology.

By implementing Ciena's solutions, Openreach was able to increase the available capacity on its fibre network by a factor of four, allowing connections to be scaled in 100G increments. This deployment helps Openreach meet its goal of expanding its FTTP footprint to 25 million premises by 2026. Ciena also co-created a new, efficient aggregation solution with Openreach, enabling its customers to adapt to changing connectivity needs.
