Nation Largest Electricity Company, one of the nation’s largest electricity generators, needed to replace aging SONET infrastructure that was difficult to maintain, nearing end of life, and unable to keep up with growing bandwidth demands from smart meters, video surveillance, grid automation, and increased sensor traffic. The utility also wanted stronger built-in security, low latency, and a solution that would be easier to manage and scale for future needs. Ciena was selected to help modernize the network with a Carrier Ethernet approach.

Ciena delivered a solution based on the Ciena 3932 Service Delivery Switch and G.8032 ring protection, giving the utility a more reliable, scalable, and simpler-to-manage communications network. The new architecture consolidated services onto a common infrastructure, reduced operational costs and staffing needs through automated provisioning and remote troubleshooting, improved security and visibility, and provided flexible bandwidth scaling up to 10 Gb/s and beyond.
