Ciena addressed this challenge with its Coherent Routing solution, combining purpose-built routers, coherent pluggable optics, and optimized photonics to cut the footprint of metro and edge network infrastructure.

Ciena implemented a more integrated network architecture, supported by its Manage, Control and Plan (MCP) software to improve capacity planning and avoid overbuilding. The result was up to 70% lower energy consumption and up to 75% less space required versus paired routers and optical transponders, along with additional power savings from 400G coherent plugs and reduced shipping and packaging impacts through device consolidation.
