Maryland Broadband Cooperative modernizes 2,600-mile network with Ciena for 800G-ready middle mile

The Maryland Broadband Cooperative (MdBC) needed to upgrade its 2,600-mile middle-mile fiber network to meet future bandwidth demands and support its ISP members across Maryland and Virginia. To achieve this, MdBC partnered with Ciena to modernize its infrastructure for greater scalability and service diversity.

Ciena implemented its Waveserver platform with WaveLogic 5 Extreme optics and the 6500 Packet-Optical Platform to enable programmable bandwidth scaling up to 800G. This future-ready solution, managed by Ciena's Navigator Control Suite, provides MdBC with a high-capacity, resilient backbone. The upgrade allows MdBC to reduce barriers for ISPs, support advanced services like telehealth, and help bridge the digital divide for underserved communities.
