A Ciena Case Study
A major utility company in the southeastern United States turned to Ciena as it faced growing threats from extreme weather, rising bandwidth demands, and the need to merge siloed OT and IT networks. Its legacy SONET-based WAN could no longer support the utility’s push toward a smarter, more distributed energy grid, including smart meters, microgrids, and renewable energy assets.
Ciena implemented an Adaptive Network built around a packet-optical WAN, including its 6500 DWDM OTN, eMOTR packet layer, 3932 Service Delivery Switch, and Blue Planet MCP software. The new architecture improved resilience, security, visibility, and scalability while reducing costs and staffing needs through automation and remote operations, and it supports highly reliable service delivery with six-9s availability and growth toward 100 Gb/s capacity.
