Case Study: Colorado Department of Transportation improves road safety and traffic flow with Ciena

A Ciena Case Study

Preview of the Colorado Department of Transportation Case Study

Intelligent transportation technologies, fiber optic networks, and data help governments and motorists keep traffic moving

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) needed a better way to manage growing transportation demands across the state, including congestion, severe weather, wildlife hazards, and incident response. To support its Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) strategy, CDOT worked with Ciena to build a more capable network foundation for real-time data collection, analysis, and driver alerts.

Ciena provided optical transport, Ethernet switching, and edge infrastructure, including the Ciena 3926, to extend CDOT’s fiber network and support higher bandwidth, lower latency, and redundant connectivity to roadside devices. This enabled faster communication of weather, wildlife, and roadway incident information, improved response times, and laid the groundwork for connected-vehicle and adaptive signal trials, helping CDOT deliver safer and more efficient roadways statewide.
