Global Tier 1 Mobile Network Operator Selects Ciena’s xHaul Routers to Support Its 5G Rollout

Global Tier 1 Mobile Network Operator, a leading mobile carrier with more than 100 million connections, was expanding its 4G and 5G networks to meet surging demand for mobile video, IoT, and fixed wireless services. To stay competitive, it needed a flexible, cost-efficient cell-site router strategy that could support dense 5G rollouts, complex routing and timing requirements, and interoperability across a multi-vendor environment. Ciena emerged as the vendor best positioned to help, with its xHaul router portfolio and 5164 Router evaluated as the key cell-site router solution.

Ciena deployed its 5164 Router as the operator’s cell-site router, providing high 10/25GbE port density, up to 800 Gb/s switching fabric, advanced timing and synchronization, routing and bridging support, open northbound interfaces, and built-in QoS and network slicing capabilities. The solution successfully passed lab trials and a detailed proof of concept in the operator’s architecture lab, meeting all CSR requirements and positioning the network for future 5G evolution.
