Israel Electric Corporation (IEC), one of Israel’s largest industrial enterprises and the country’s integrated electric utility, needed to replace an aging SDH network that had become costly to maintain, lacked the bandwidth and protocols for modern applications, offered limited encryption, and was difficult to recover after outages. To support its internal communications, data centers, and growing service demands, IEC turned to Ciena and its packet-optical networking portfolio.

Ciena implemented its 6500 Packet-Optical Platform with a 100G DWDM OTN-switched core network, WaveLogic Encryption, and MCP management software. The new solution gave IEC a highly secure, resilient, and flexible network with always-on AES-256 encryption, 99.999% reliability and availability, self-healing capabilities, and support for modern services such as smart grid and IoT. IEC also expects to reduce complexity and lower costs, with savings of more than 50% per gigabyte.
