CANARIE, Canada’s national research and education network, needed to keep pace with explosive traffic growth and rising demand from researchers working in data-intensive fields like genomics, astronomy, and physics. To support more than a million users across 1,100+ institutions and prepare for 100G connectivity, CANARIE turned to Ciena and its 6500 Packet-Optical Platform.

Ciena helped CANARIE upgrade from 10G to 100G with only a minor hardware and software reconfiguration, enabling a fast, cost-effective rollout with no downtime. The new 100G network provides scalable bandwidth on demand, supports major research links including Montreal-to-New York and the ANA-100G trans-Atlantic connection, and gives Canadian researchers faster access to global big data resources and international collaboration.
