Smithsonian Institution achieves significant fleet efficiency improvements

The Smithsonian Institution, which manages more than 2,500 assets worldwide to support its cultural and educational mission, identified a fragmented and inefficient approach to fleet management after a 2006 review. To address this, the organization created a Fleet Manager who sought a centralized, configurable fleet information system to improve control, reduce operating costs and enable fact-based decision-making.

In late 2007 the Smithsonian implemented Chevin Fleet Solutions’ web-based FleetWave (a five-month rollout), configuring modules for maintenance, inventory, fuel and motor-pool access, plus secure user roles and ongoing support. The centralized system enabled true lifecycle-cost analysis, cut bi-annual reporting from months to days, improved financial reporting and operational visibility, and produced measurable cost reductions and a leaner, more efficient fleet.
