Gannett, a leading media and marketing company behind USA TODAY and dozens of local news brands, was hampered by siloed operations, manual handoffs, and “shadow IT” where developers spun up ungoverned cloud resources. Provisioning and deployments could take days or weeks, and security and finance lacked visibility into costs and stack configurations—prompting a push to standardize, govern and accelerate delivery.

Gannett adopted Chef and rebuilt a VPC on AWS to treat infrastructure as code, introduced CI testing, a private cookbook Supermarket and a GitHub/Jenkins workflow, and embedded cross-functional teams to drive cultural change. The result: deployments and provisioning dropped from weeks to minutes, environments are consistent and auditable, development cycles are faster and more reusable, and the company moved rapidly toward full organizational adoption.
