Instacart, the on-demand grocery delivery platform, needed to screen thousands of prospective Shoppers each week for motor vehicle and criminal background checks while meeting FCRA, state, county, and retailer compliance requirements and minimizing friction for applicants. To handle that volume and complexity, Instacart partnered with Checkr to run compliant background checks and identity verification as part of its onboarding workflow.

Checkr’s API and technology let Instacart scale its screening process without sacrificing compliance or speed: about 75% of criminal background checks are returned within three days, and the program has grown nearly 20x since 2014. By using Checkr, Instacart maintained regulatory compliance (validated by outside counsel), reduced turnaround time, and integrated background checks smoothly into its product to accelerate Shopper activation.
