A Check Point Software Case Study
The University of Hawaii, a public system spanning six islands with 10 campuses and tens of thousands of students and staff, needed a more scalable, manageable and intelligent firewall/VPN to support heavy traffic (peak sessions in the tens of thousands), secure online student payments, protect distributed application developers’ test data, and satisfy external auditors. Its legacy firewall lacked flexibility and advanced inspection capabilities to keep pace with evolving attacks and regulatory requirements.
Working with Secure Technology Hawaii and Corrent, UH deployed Check Point VPN-1 Power on a Corrent SR600 appliance with Application Intelligence and Stateful Inspection. The solution delivered the needed scalability and manageability, helped prevent sophisticated attacks, enabled Visa/MasterCard certification for online registration, satisfied PricewaterhouseCoopers audits, and provided secure VPN access for dispersed developers—positioning UH to meet future compliance challenges.
