A Check Point Software Case Study
Redditch Borough Council, which delivers local services to about 79,000 residents with a staff of roughly 1,100, faced a major security problem in the late 1990s when boot-sector viruses spread via infected floppy disks and other removable media introduced from home. The council’s existing antivirus coverage was limited and insufficient, and budget constraints prevented a more costly overhaul; they needed a single, manageable solution to prevent unauthorized software installation and preserve data integrity across all council PCs.
After testing several products, the IT team deployed Pointsec Protector (later part of Check Point) for its easy installation, comprehensive controls and cost-effectiveness. The policy-driven solution let administrators block or restrict removable media (deny, read-only, authorized, or encrypted-only), stopping rogue devices, unlicensed software and malware from entering the network. The rollout secured endpoints across the council, gave IT centralized control, and delivered long-term protection and strong vendor support.
