A Small Orthopedic Surgical Office Qualifies for Meaningful Use Incentives

West LA Hand Center is a small orthopedic hand surgery practice in Santa Monica run by solo physician Dr. Douglas Freedman with an office manager and a physician assistant, seeing 15–22 patients per day. Wanting to move from paper charts to an EHR to improve documentation, workflow, referral communication and to meet emerging Meaningful Use requirements, the practice sought a solution that would handle dictation, specialty templates and a steady flow of faxed records.

They implemented ChartLogic EHR, using its PrecisionVoice dictation to capture discrete encounter data, orthopedic templates and flowsheets for faster documentation, and quick-scanning of paper records. The system was easy to use with responsive support; the practice qualified for Meaningful Use in May 2011 (receiving an $18,000 incentive), sped up referrals and documentation, and benefited from having fully digital records during an office move.
