BitGym, a mobile fitness app that uses computer-vision to track workouts, pivoted from one-time in-app video purchases to a subscription model after a successful Kickstarter. Building homegrown subscription pages and a customer portal on top of early Stripe subscriptions created growing technical debt and “spaghetti” code, limited payment options, and constrained growth.
BitGym adopted Chargebee to import 1,000+ subscribers and leverage richer APIs, a self-serve checkout/portal, coupons, and additional payment methods (Stripe, Amazon, PayPal) including annual plans. The move doubled monthly paying customers, enabled seasonal acquisition campaigns, freed ~40% of founders’ billing-related time, and delivered an 80% increase in company productivity while simplifying billing and maintenance.
