Rust-Oleum Gathers DIY-lovers to Test Products & Improve Marketing

Rust-Oleum, the iconic American paints and sprays brand, needed a better way to connect with customers, gather feedback, and support innovation since it sells mainly through retailers rather than its own stores. In 2015, it turned to Chaordix and its community platform to create a direct channel to DIY fans, makers, crafters, and hobbyists who could help test products and share insights.

Chaordix helped Rust-Oleum launch Creator’s Studio, a branded online community where members join challenges, answer surveys, discuss ideas, and test prototypes. The community grew to more than 13,000 members and generated over 200,000 contributions, helping Rust-Oleum save up to 80% on market research costs while also speeding up feedback and content development. The brand used member input to improve product launches, build FAQs and social responses, and get highly targeted feedback from segments like woodworkers and other DIY experts.
