A CHAMPS Software, Inc. Case Study
CHAMPS Software has supported the U.S. Department of Energy at the Hanford Site since January 2003, partnering with Bechtel National and other subcontractors to design, build and commission a radioactive waste treatment plant on a 65‑acre site. The project tackles one of the nation’s largest environmental cleanup challenges—managing waste from 177 underground tanks at the historic 586‑square‑mile Hanford complex—one of DOE’s most technically demanding remediation efforts.
CHAMPS’ Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) is used by the Office of River Protection to support waste retrieval and stabilization, the engineering and construction of the Vit Plant, and day‑to‑day maintenance, equipment, materials and process management. The Vit Plant uses vitrification—melting waste with glass formers and pouring the molten mixture into stainless steel canisters—to immobilize radioactive material in a stable glass form that will safely contain radioactivity for hundreds to thousands of years.
