Shift in consumer preference sparks need for network redesign

Shaw Industries, a global flooring provider, faced a supply chain challenge as consumer demand shifted from carpet to hard surfaces. Its network was originally built to move soft flooring rolls from Dalton, Georgia, but it was not well suited to handling palletized products from multiple domestic and global sources. To address this, Shaw Industries engaged Chainalytics and its supply chain design practice to help redesign the network.

Chainalytics analyzed Shaw Industries’ distribution network to find the least-cost go-forward design while maintaining service levels and managing risk and complexity. The solution identified opportunities to reduce interfacility transfers and warehouse handling, and to resize, relocate, or close 15-20% of Regional Distribution Center locations, lowering operating costs. Chainalytics also recommended product-specific import and stocking strategies that reduced freight and handling costs, helping Shaw better serve customers while preserving strong service performance.
