A C.H. Robinson Case Study

How Transportation Expertise Grows Sales

Western Growers, a trade association representing about 3,000 fresh produce growers and shippers, faced major transportation challenges as retail consolidation shifted to delivered pricing and year‑round, regional sourcing. Smaller and LTL shippers struggled to secure reliable, cost‑effective refrigerated capacity and meet customer delivery requirements, so Western Growers partnered with C.H. Robinson to develop a freight aggregation/transportation program to serve its members.

C.H. Robinson implemented a consolidation program with customized pricing, extensive LTL and surge capacity, cross‑border service, inventory/outsourcing options, and real‑time visibility and reporting. The program helped members meet delivery commitments, win new customers (for example, Gills Onions secured national LTL business and focused on core operations), improved service and benchmarking, increased membership connectivity, and generated measurable savings—potato growers saved nearly a half million dollars versus truckload rates during peak season.
