A Cerner Case Study
Truman Medical Centers is an academic health system in Kansas City with two inpatient facilities (600 beds), 51 clinics and thousands of staff serving nearly half a million patients annually. Facing inefficient workflows and staff frustration from nurses carrying five separate devices (phone, laptop, camera, pager and CareMobile), TMC sought a single-device solution to improve clinician efficiency, patient care and staff satisfaction.
TMC implemented Zebra’s TC51‑HC mobile computer paired with Cerner’s CareAware Connect to consolidate voice/text, camera capture, barcode scanning and EHR access on one handheld. As reported by TMC, nurses now carry one device instead of five, communication and safety checks are faster, disinfection time dropped roughly tenfold, battery life and bedside time improved, and one nurse’s steps fell from more than 15,000 to about 7,800 over comparable shifts.
