A Cerner Case Study
Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (SASH) needed a more reliable, faster way to identify child protection concerns: manual checks were time-consuming (about 45 seconds per search) and risked missing vital, rapidly changing information. As the first Cerner Millennium trust in England to enable the NHS Child Protection – Information Sharing (CP‑IS) integration, SASH sought to connect secure safeguarding data directly into its electronic record to improve patient safety for young and vulnerable patients.
By automating CP‑IS queries within Cerner Millennium, SASH now automatically checks every admitted child on arrival, including unborn children where protection plans exist. In one week the system queried 7,609 young people and saved an estimated 7 hours 36 minutes versus the old manual process; staff gain instant visibility of safeguarding information, assurance in A&E triage, and increased collaboration from social workers.
