A Cerner Case Study
Roper St. Francis, a four‑hospital system in Charleston, SC, sought to improve patient safety and care coordination by implementing the Cerner Millennium EHR as part of its HARBOR initiative. Leadership identified a key challenge: achieving rapid clinician adoption and consistent medication reconciliation and documentation across sites to realize the benefits of an integrated medical record.
To drive adoption the organization created a physician‑led Physicians’ IT Advisory Council (PITAC) that enforced governance, required training, set CPOE and documentation expectations, and evolved into a multidisciplinary oversight body. Three months after go‑live, key performance indicators showed strong provider engagement: medication reconciliation at discharge reached 95.5%–98.4% across locations, medication history and admission reconciliation neared or exceeded targets, and CPOE rates met or exceeded three‑month goals.
