A Cerner Case Study
Rogers Memorial Hospital, part of Rogers Behavioral Health, became the first standalone acute psychiatric hospital system in the U.S. to achieve HIMSS Stage 6. The organization faced the challenge of finding an EHR tailored to behavioral health needs across multiple inpatient and outpatient sites and levels of care—requiring standardized documentation for 15‑minute safety checks, compliance with HBIPS measures, improved medication safety, and resolution of a multi‑million dollar coding backlog.
Rogers selected and implemented Cerner (purchase 2013, system‑wide 2015) and built custom workflows and safeguards—forcing required fields for antipsychotic discharge rationale, enabling mobile iPad rounding, integrating dispensing and barcode scanning, and streamlining revenue cycle processes. The result: near elimination of medication errors, standardized care and records across sites, coding backlog reduced to under $50,000, billing cycles shortened to about three days, and ongoing rollouts (CareAware Connect, single sign‑on, patient portal) to extend those gains.
