Rehabilitation hospital optimizes workflow and patient experience with electronic self-service registration

Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, a 242‑bed post‑acute rehabilitation hospital in Chicago, needed to streamline a high‑volume, multilingual registration process after opening its new research facility. Manual paper check‑in and form scanning created inefficiencies for staff, delayed registration, and generated excess paper waste.

In March 2017 the hospital implemented Cerner Patient Kiosk and eSignature, allowing patients to self‑check in, verify demographics and insurance, and sign consent and billing forms electronically (including in multiple languages). The change sped up registration, improved data accuracy for billing, reduced paper costs and waste, freed staff for other tasks, and increased both patient and staff satisfaction.
