A Cerner Case Study
Women's Hospital in Doha, Qatar, working with Cerner, faced low exclusive breastfeeding rates—below Ministry of Public Health and WHO guidelines—especially in its high-dependency obstetric unit where staff manage complicated, critically ill mothers. Prior to the initiative fewer than 60% of new mothers were exclusively breastfeeding, and clinicians found it hard to consistently deliver and track breastfeeding education.
The hospital introduced mandatory training for nurses and midwives and embedded standardized breastfeeding education into Cerner’s PowerChart Maternity so staff could document and follow up on teaching. Completion of the training rose to 100% and exclusive breastfeeding increased to 92%; clinicians report easier charting, better follow-up after discharge, and plans to expand the program toward WHO Baby‑Friendly recognition.
