A Cerner Case Study
The Children's Hospital of Georgia at Augusta University faced a critical challenge in its Level IV NICU: making sure vulnerable infants received the right mothers' milk or formula while staff manually double-checked more than 350 bottles a day using handwritten logs. As part of a broader effort to modernize nursing solutions and advance its electronic medical record goals, the hospital needed a safer, more efficient milk-management process.
By implementing Cerner’s Human Milk and Formula Management barcode solution in December 2015, CHOG automated collection, storage, preparation and administration workflows—eliminating manual double checks and improving transparency for families. The NICU reported no errors after implementation, achieved 100% accuracy in mothers’ milk management, cut expired milk incidents by 63% and mismatches by 25% (Dec 2015–June 2016), and freed nursing time while giving mothers clearer information about their stored milk.
