A Cerner Case Study
University of Missouri Health Care (MU Health Care) set out to improve patient care and operational efficiency across its five hospitals and 50+ clinics by advancing its health IT capabilities. The challenge was to leverage electronic health records and connected technology to reduce infections, streamline workflows, increase provider time with patients, and meet high EHR maturity and regulatory goals.
Working with the Tiger Institute, MU deployed Cerner Millennium, integrated medical devices, and patient-facing tools like OpenNotes and a portal to deliver real-time data into the EHR. Outcomes included a 25% drop in catheter-associated UTIs, more than 36,500 clinician hours saved annually, first-case OR starts up from 21% to 77%, an 18% rise in surgical volume, $13M+ in HIM cost savings, a 202% ROI since 2010, and recognition with the HIMSS Davies Award and other national honors.
