A Cerner Case Study
St. John Providence in Detroit faced delays and care gaps because providers couldn’t easily access patient records from other organizations or even all acute-care tests within their own system, relying instead on faxes, paper charts or out-of-workflow requests. In one critical case, clinicians almost lacked a trauma patient’s medication history until Cerner’s interoperability capability made that information available and helped stabilize the patient.
After implementing Cerner’s interoperability solution in July 2016, staff could electronically request Continuity of Care Documents (CCDs) and send secure provider-to-provider messages, dramatically speeding access to records. From Q4 2016 through Q1 2017 St. John Providence exchanged more than 1.3 million CCDs and over 136,000 secure messages, and in January 2018 expanded access nationally by going live with CommonWell, improving safety and care coordination.
