Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital receives prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award

Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital, a long‑time Cerner client in Sugar Land, Texas, set out to deliver consistently safer, higher‑quality care and to reduce preventable harm and readmissions. The challenge was to maintain top performance across key patient safety and outcome metrics—such as preventing ventilator‑associated pneumonia, lowering 30‑day readmissions for AMI, CHF and pneumonia, and complying with computerized physician order entry (CPOE)—while sustaining operational excellence.

Using Cerner Millennium® EHR tools (including the St. John Sepsis agent, VTE Advisor and Positive Patient Identification) combined with strong leadership and workforce collaboration, the hospital drove measurable improvements. From FY2013–FY2016 it ranked in the national top decile for several safety indicators, sustained 14 years without ventilator‑associated pneumonia, lowered readmissions and reduced never events, achievements that culminated in the hospital receiving the 2016 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.
