A Cerner Case Study
Karuna Trust, a Karnataka state-based non-governmental organization, faced the challenge of digitizing its Primary Health Centers (PHCs) to modernize care and respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. Partnering with vendor Cerner, Karuna Trust implemented the Cerner Millennium electronic health record (EHR) to create digital records and establish new workflows for triaging patients.
Cerner's solution involved providing internet connectivity, extensive training, and digital forms to efficiently screen patients for COVID-19 symptoms. They also developed the CovSAFE app for community health workers to identify and track potential cases in remote areas. As a result, Karuna Trust successfully digitized over 35 PHCs, which became role models for other government centers. During a 13-month period, the clinics were able to triage approximately 10% of all patients, helping to minimize cross-contamination and contain the spread of the virus.
