Close, convenient access to health care benefits for union members

The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 101 (IUOE 101) partnered with Cerner to address a growing access problem for its members: many had no established primary care, faced cost barriers, and couldn’t afford long waits or lost wages to see a doctor. Union leaders wanted a convenient, on-site solution that fit members’ demanding schedules and removed copays and deductibles as obstacles to care.

IUOE 101 opened a clinic at its Kansas City office in June 2016 offering easy scheduling, longer visits with physicians, and rapid specialist referrals. Through June 2017 the center logged more than 2,300 visits, diagnosed over 190 cases of hypertension and nearly 40 cases of diabetes, exceeded projected visits by 26%, and earned a 99.5% satisfaction rate; it also delivered life-changing care for members like Steven Collier and supported prevention and weight-loss efforts for others, with anticipated savings for the union’s health funds.
