A Cerner Case Study
Children’s National Health System, working with the Bear Institute and Cerner, sought a way to make quality and safety indicators visible in real time so clinicians could take a proactive approach to prevent complications (for example urinary tract infections) and improve compliance with safety tasks across critical care units.
They created “Quality Boards,” live digital dashboards that pull EHR data and display key metrics on large screens visible to providers and families. Deployed first in the PICU (and later NICU and Cardiac ICU), the boards plus twice-daily safety huddles cut time to treatment consent by 49%, reduced patients with urinary catheters >96 hours from 11% to 4%, and raised medication reconciliation completion from 80% to 92%; the system is being expanded hospital-wide.
