A Cerner Case Study
Children’s Mercy, a major pediatric medical center in Kansas City, confronted high interstage mortality among high‑risk single ventricle (SV) infants — a period between the first and second surgeries when nationally 5–20% of these babies do not survive and their pilot center experienced 20% mortality.
They launched CHAMP (Cardiac High Acuity Monitoring Program), a tablet‑based, encrypted home‑monitoring app that sends parent‑reported physiologic data and video directly into the EHR so nurse coordinators can intervene sooner. Since May 2014 CHAMP reduced interstage mortality at the pilot site from 20% to 0% (all 62 monitored infants survived), earned the ANCC 2016 Magnet Prize sponsored by Cerner, and is being adopted or considered by numerous other centers.
