A Cerner Case Study
Carolinas HealthCare System launched a three-year optimization to simplify and standardize its Cerner EHR across 12 facilities and more than 8,000 nurses and nursing assistants. The goal was to reduce redundant tasks and clicks, streamline documentation and medication workflows, and ultimately improve nurse efficiency and patient care.
The team targeted five areas—task reduction, position alignment, medication process changes, migrating PowerForms to iView, and implementing an interdisciplinary plan of care—plus two clinical decision support tools. The work eliminated 66 routine tasks and more than 18 million annual clicks, improved on-time medication administration by 15% (saving ~400,000 clicks), cut head-to-toe assessment time by 20% (returning ~35,000 nursing hours), and deployed sepsis and C. difficile alerts that prompted timely evaluations and interventions.
