Case Study: Zoosk reduces bot traffic and AWS spend with Cequence Security

A Cequence Security Case Study

Zoosk cuts synthetic traffic and AWS spend with Cequence Security

Zoosk, a leading online dating platform with over 35 million members, faced significant challenges from automated bots used for fake account creation and account takeover attacks. These malicious activities led to fraud and a massive increase in infrastructure costs, with 80-90% of their traffic being synthetic. Their initial bot mitigation solution, which relied on client-side JavaScript and an SDK, became less effective over time and created friction in their DevOps process, leading them to seek a new partner in Cequence Security.

Cequence Security implemented its Application Security Platform (ASP) to provide Zoosk with the visibility needed to accurately distinguish and mitigate malicious bot activity from legitimate traffic. The solution analyzed interactions from multiple perspectives to build syntactic profiles, allowing Zoosk to stop automated attacks even as they evolved. As a result, Zoosk future-proofed its security, reduced AWS spend, and improved the user experience. The Cequence solution also successfully detected and addressed a spike in login activity following a major breach that exposed millions of Facebook access tokens.
