OpenStack - Customer Case Study

The customer, OpenStack, an open cloud platform, faced the challenge of scaling its storage infrastructure to meet growing demands without the complexity of managing multiple independent storage subsystems or the risk of vendor lock-in from a DIY Ceph deployment. The vendor, SoftIron, addressed this with its purpose-built HyperDrive storage appliance, which is optimized for the Ceph software-defined storage (SDS) that OpenStack relies on.

SoftIron's solution provided a pre-configured, flexible hardware platform for Ceph, enabling non-disruptive expansion of storage capacity independent of compute resources. This allowed OpenStack cloud architects to easily scale their storage to match application needs, whether for high performance or high capacity. The results included predictable performance, significant operational simplification through a web-based management tool, and superior energy efficiency leading to utility savings and longer hardware life.
